Competition season

Article text
Competition season is upon us once more, and I'm currently waiting to hear whether any of my shortlisted entries for the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year (1 image), GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year (5 images) or British Wildlife Photography Awards (1 image) have won a prize.

I've been laid up with a bad back for the last 7 or 8 weeks, so not being able to get out with the camera, frustrating though it has been, gave me more time than usual to devote to selecting and processing (and often reprocessing) the best shots from last year.

I'm trying not to get too excited, and am pretty chuffed just to have a few images shortlisted this year - however I can't help but dream that one day I'll see one of my photographs exhibited on the hallowed walls of the Natural History Museum! This could be my year - but realistically I know it probably won't be. The standard of wildlife photography continues to improve, and the quality of the images that win the big competitions now is astoundingly high. As I said - I can but dream!
